+1  Me too.  Her kids all seem pretty functional--the eldest is a doctor.   Melinda could have been a Lauren Sanchez and just hang around celebrities on a yacht all day.  But she's gone to the poorest countries in the world and tried to help bring medicine and clean water.  And I think her new org is focused specifically on helping poor women. [/quote]

Wow, some of the posts here are totally bonkers.  Melinda has been speaking out on behalf of the most vulnerable populations in the world for decades and she has sat for many, many interviews, so before you judge her, I recommend that you go on YouTube and listen to her first.  She cares about providing free birth control to women in extremely impoverished areas and actually spends the money to make it happen.  She is an amazing speaker and non-profit leader.

But imho I would rather hear from the person whose FT job/career focuses on the work rather than from the billionaire philanthropist.

As someone whose career has focused on such things, I can report that Philanthropy plays an important role, but the philanthropists are just people who have/demand a platform thanks to their money. Sure, she’s read up on the issues and makes thoughtful decisions, but she’s not an expert who deserves the attention she gets.

Nobody likes listening to the billionaire pontificate about the poor after she’s just flown in on a private jet and will retreat to one of her many mansions after the photo op. [/quote]
