I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that he’s been propositioned several times for a sham marriage to perpetrate green card fraud (was brought up because I’m dating someone here on a visa and things are starting to get serious). He said it’s actually very common in many communities to do this where someone gets legally married and fakes their relationship history, and it’s often difficult for USCIS to prove. It kind of blew my mind that people will risk imprisonment and go through the hassle of marrying someone you don’t love just to make $10-20k. Why doesn’t this get talked about more?
Because once you are a part of that community, lots of people who need GC become very dear to you. I don’t know of cases of outright fraud - marrying a total stranger, but I would do it for a close friend. Heck, my college boyfriend was a closeted gay, and if I knew, I would totally offer it to him for free, just to get him out of the home country. That marriage would have been way better than many on DCUM. I didn’t know, and he stayed in the closet back home, and eventually died of AIDS. His sister still thinks he must have gotten it from some dental work.
