Bike lanes are now considered a side benefit of "safety". The point of which is to reduce and shrink the width of travel lanes in order to increase congestion and thereby reduce speeding. [/quote] Aside from increasing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing congestion just encourages drivers to look for other ways to save time, like rolling through stop signs. There's no free lunch here. If drivers expect their drive to work to take 25 minutes, you're not going to convince them that now it should suddenly takes 40 minutes. [/quote]
