Veteran’s preference places a value of the diversity of knowledge and skills acquired through the military. It provides equity to service members following their service. Veteran’s preference usurps purely merit based hiring. It allows veterans with fewer skills and less experience to overtake (and sometimes block) more experienced applicants during the federal hiring process. This is permitted because Congress decided it was equitable to provide (sometimes) lower skilled veterans a chances to be included in the federal workforce. The argument is that the diversity of skills acquired through military service isn’t as easily quantified as private sector service. [/quote]
