What is the future for science research? Should students now be fundamentally steered in a different different direction? I am really struggling to grasp what guidance is now appropriate for science and science research oriented students.
This is a really good question and nobody knows yet. Almost all scientific research in this country is directly funded by or intertwined with federal funding. Medical schools and academic medical centers subsist on federal funds. The list goes on.
Yep. It's shocking because anyone can tell you that STEM infrastructure development is a national security issue. The US Military funds STEM education programs because having domestic production of everything from chips to steel to polymers is a key part of military readiness.
Why is it only chips and steel and polymers? I thought the US military has a small pox vax? Sure I know vaccines are garbage......but everyone will need that garbage vax if smallpox ever gets loose again. Don't we need robust medical research as well?
Those were just examples. The US military also invested heavily in medicine and so many doctors my Dad's age had their med school paid for by the US military. The military understands that a dumbed down society makes us vulnerable.
