Side track…this never works for me. My DH has the money, he knows that buying me gifts is my love language yet I send him links of things I like and he never buys them. I know he loves me and wants me to be happy, but he never does this. I have to buy everything myself.

OP here. I don’t think the bag itself is relevant to the discussion, but it’s a basic designer bag. I appreciate all the opinions. I need to talk to DH before buying anything like this.  He would not be very supportive of a big expense, but has told me I can buy ‘whatever I want’. We do not exchange expensive presents and [b]our expenses are near our income[/b] so there’s not much left but I don’t really know the details of our budget as he handles the finances (he is a SAHD) since I’m busy working. Hmmmm, OP.
This is a bit worrying.
Our income is far less than yours, and our expenses are nowhere near our income. I can afford a $4k bag because I've got the savings. But would I buy one? Never. I'm not a designer bag sort of person.

If you have to discuss buying a designer bag with your husband, then perhaps you are stretched too far. If you are paying a huge mortgage on two houses and private schools for two kids, plus retirement savings on top of regular living expenses, then I suggest working out your budget. before spending $4k on a designer bag.

You should easily be able to afford a designer bag if your HHI is $300k per year. If you can't, then take a look at your entire financial picture because something is not right here.
