If you love the bag, think you will use it, and the cost won't impact your ability to meet your financial priorities, buy it. This doesn't sound like an impulse purchase for you. You've looked at alternatives in a different price point and they are not suitable for your purposes. Would you feel better buying several $500 bags instead that aren't quite right and end up not getting used or getting replaced?

Would you agonize like this over a trip instead of a bag? Objectively, they fall into the same category of discretionary luxuries.

Not low IQ, just very high HHI and lots of money in the bank and appreciate the quality of the leather. If all your bags are inexpensive ones you may just not know what you are missing (which is good if you can't afford it).

I would never spend that much on a handbag, but I have no qualms spending quite a bit more on a vacation that’s over in a few days. Different priorities

OP - Go to the store or order the bag. Live with it for a day or so and you will either feel excited and happy or sick to your stomach. That will tell you whether to return it or not.

I don't have to justify my purchases. I sense that you will feel guilty if you get it, so skip. I grew up with beautiful stuff, so for me it's not a big deal, but for a lot of people, especially those who grew up with low resources, spending money is a loaded subject that triggers a lot of guilt and remorse.

OP here. I don’t think the bag itself is relevant to the discussion, but it’s a basic designer bag. I appreciate all the opinions. I need to talk to DH before buying anything like this. He would not be very supportive of a big expense, but has told me I can buy ‘whatever I want’. We do not exchange expensive presents and our expenses are near our income so there’s not much left but I don’t really know the details of our budget as he handles the finances (he is a SAHD) since I’m busy working.

This is a bit worrying.
Our income is far less than yours, and our expenses are nowhere near our income. I can afford a $4k bag because I've got the savings. But would I buy one? Never. I'm not a designer bag sort of person.

If you have to discuss buying a designer bag with your husband, then perhaps you are stretched too far. If you are paying a huge mortgage on two houses and private schools for two kids, plus retirement savings on top of regular living expenses, then I suggest working out your budget. before spending $4k on a designer bag.

You should easily be able to afford a designer bag if your HHI is $300k per year. If you can't, then take a look at your entire financial picture because something is not right here.

If I had the money, I'd buy a $3k bag in a heartbeat. I'm not getting any younger, and if I wanted such a bag, I would buy it without hesitation.

Buying gifts is one of DH love languages. My closet is thankful and so am I.
