It isn’t the PTO’s responsibility to cover this. If they can, great, but it shouldn’t be people’s expectation. FCPS made this decision and they need to figure out the plan, not pass it along to the parent groups to cover.
22:04 here. In addition to the PTA arranged sports camp, as a no cost option, the school will provide IAs, school monitors, school staff and central office personnel to oversee time for students to complete hw, STMath, Lexia, MyOn, independent reading
Yeah this is absolutely a valuable and age-appropriate way for 4-7 year olds to spend hours. This is truly embarrassing.

But so many resort to YouTube to teach their lessons and grading is automatic.
You are kidding right?
I teach 6th grade.
Here is what an ES does during planning since you seem unaware.
1) Lesson Planning - add in two new curriculums this year! They gave to plan for EVERY Subject plus small groups and morning meeting.
2) Grading - some is automatic but not all assignments we grade are computer based.
3) Email - responding to parents, staff, sending newsletters
4)PD - FCPS sends them throughout the year.
5)Administrative Tasks - random tasks the county or school requires. Going through forms that need to be collected and organized.
6) Dealing with student needs. Sometimes we have to use our planning to deal with crying kids or a behavior incident.
7) Attend meetings - CLT, IEP, 504, other meetings.
Add onto all of this that many ES teachers aren’t getting the required amount of planning time.
Also going to add that my school ends at 4:05. We still have kids until 4:30-4:45 most days. So many are leaving close to 5.
Why are they staying so late?

There’s a large percentage of teachers that believe out of the three levels elementary, middle, and high school - That elementary is the hardest level to be a teacher.
I think when it comes to planning it is definitely harder but grading is definitely more difficult in HS. It is a reason many ES departmentalize in upper ES. Planning for 1-2 subjects vs 5-6.

I think this is so ridiculous. Our kids are in school 9am-3:30. I see teachers leave at 3:45. Why can’t they stay at school like the rest of us until 5-6pm? Why can’t they train over the summer? Or on the like 4 months total they have off?
