Anyone know anything about this direct-admit program in the school of education? Admissions stats? Harder or easier to get in than the arts and sciences school there? Does it matter if male vs female?
The students who get in from the DC-area private school we attend are much "lower" as far as SAT and course quality/math path: it is a lot easier, as is nursing. APCalculus is not needed, they usually take regular calc or end in AP stats after regular precal, and they do not expect all the hard AP in core courses and all that, compared to what is needed from the A&S or Engineering admits. For example A&S and Engineering unhooked usually needs 1430+ as well as top 25% or so GPA with AP english, APUSH at least one of AP Bio or Chem or PhysC, whereas the kinesiology admits come from the middle of the pack and their science track usually has them do one year each of Bio Chem physics then APES as their AP, or some do Anatomy and physiology, and SATs are 1350-1400 or so . Nursing students are admitted from even lower in the class, 1200-1300 is the typical SAT, and they usually take anatomy and physiology and bio and chem and take precalculus or AP stats, so they are from the lowest math track in the high schools. We have a friend at Penn Nursing and they too have a lower standard/lower expectations compared to the main 3 schools of UPenn, but because they only take 100-150 students per year the admit rate is still very low, and they focus on work experience and an application that shows true compassion for other humans. The friend got in with a 1410 SAT and they are average to smart in their opinion, compared to the other 100 or so students. Nursing does not take the same intro chem and bio and all that that would be taken by A&S, Engineering and Wharton(yes there are premeds in Wharton!). Anyway they chose Upenn, but got into UVA nursing which the high school told them was a mathc but that if they did UVA A&S would be a reach. Kinesiology is structured differently but it is likewise separate from UVA A&S, as far as courses, andthe course difficulty is not the same. There is a reason Echols and Rodman Scholars program is for A&S, Engineering and there is not a similar academic scholars program for Kinesiology and Nursing, they just are not the same level of academic rigor
Hmm. Not true at all based on our child's experience. We have known folks rejected from UVA nursing with crazy high academic credentials, at least for in state. There are only 50 slots for in state available, and there is a very high in state yield rate for School of Nursing. If you want nursing, it is considered the best program in Virginia at in state rates. It may have been true in the past, but not now.
