That’s great that they will tell you that soon. We have to wait over a month.

Do you think still appeal despite the Iowa ? How do we do that? We will ask the teacher to appeal for him but I remember him saying kids should get 550 or higher. My child is super upset on his SOL despite having a good score because he was aiming for the 550…
Why would you appeal an SOL score when they don’t count for anything? What a waste of time.

He got an A- in Algebra in 7th and barely got B+ in Geometry in 8th, working incredibly hard and with a ton of stress, pushing hard for an A with the awareness that he probably couldn't swing it. Now he says he doesn't think he is great at math, even though it was always his easiest subject. If your kid was that far from the IAAT threshold, it's probably a bad idea to push Algebra in 7th. Not because of Algebra, but the classes further down the road.
It’s hard to tell. Depends on the kid.
DC got 84th percentile on the IAAT 586 on sol in 6th grade. Hardly ever studied during elementary. Also 84th percentile as result of not marking answers for questions DC had no time to answer.
Wrote to DC’s middle school and was assured at the beginning of the year DC would be assessed for fit which done and the class teacher promptly placed DC in algebra 1. Thanks to the encouragement in this forum and DC’s friends parents I appealed.
Now in 8th grade dc got a 600 in geometry and all As. Geometry was a breeze.

Anonymous wrote:Can someone explain why kids need to take algebra in 7th? I took Algebra in 9th and AP Calculus in 12th and have a phD in mechanical engineering. Not sure what taking Algebra in 7th would have done to change my schooling and career path?

We received an email saying he would be placed in Algebra 1 H unless we sent an email asking for 7th H instead and gave us a week to respond. I am assuming that they sent a placement email to kids who missed the cut as well?
The school matters for this. Is it an AAP middle? If not, they need enough kids to make a class.
