Real talk — why is NOVA more white / asian / middle eastern, and Maryland is more black / latino / Jewish? I’m a DC area native and admittedly don’t understand the dynamics behind this, but maybe it’s just ignorance due to my age or family history or whatever. Whats the deal here? It’s definitely noticeable. Growing up for instance, I went to private school in Upper NW. Literally all of the black kids lived in Silver Spring, Bowie, and a few others. Every single Jewish kid lived in MoCo — their families would never live in NoVa not a single one of them. As for the white kids the majority lived in NoVa (McLean, Alexandria, Arlington), but some lived in Chevy Chase village. Asians and middle eastern kids all lived in NoVa. Can anyone explain?
Waves of refugees came to NoVa in the 1970s to 1990s due to war, conflict, and their assistance to the US military. Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians and Persians in the 1970s. Afghanis in the 1980s, 2000s, and recently due to the reemergence of the Taliban. In the 1970s-90s, it was cheaper to settle in NoVa than Montgomery County. DC was dangerous and had poor schools, so those recent arrivals tended to stay away from the city (this is also why the Chinese eventually left the District for cheaper/safer Rockville). Refugee groups tend to be helped by religious groups when they arrive in country. I'd be curious to know if NoVa churches were primarily helping the initial waves of various Asian refugee ethnic groups and that's why they ended up in NoVa (vs. MoCo or PG counties).
