Here's the big picture cycle:

Ref starts out young, gets yelled at, isn't paid well, decides getting yelled at isn't worth it, quits.

New ref #2 comes in, lack of experienced refs puts inexperienced refs in situations they aren't ready for, ref makes a few bad calls and is torn to shreds by parents. Ref decides it's not worth it, quits.

Ref #3, 4, 5...... repeat the cycle. 1 in about 20 will last more than a year.

Lots of refs with 10-20 years experience, lots with less than 2. Very few with 2-10 years because starting and getting comfortable making hard calls takes time, the job is thankless, and the pay isnt great especially at first. Many new refs don't cut it.

Remember new refs need time to develop and that's pretty much the reason they were assigned to a third tier <u12 team. Many are thrown into situations they aren't ready for too early because of parents who justify yelling so their kid has a better chance to win. Have some perspective people...
