I watch people shouting at refs and I seriously don’t understand what good they can think might possibly come of it. I feel like I’m missing something here.

It's a part of sports culture and tradition.

No. Were you born in a barn?

Refs at all level of sports get yelled at during games. Even in tennis, fans will whistle at judges and players. It is absolutely a part of sports culture. If you want to watch a game in silence, watch at home or move to Japan. In 'Merica, we let refs and players know what we are thinking.

If you don’t understand the difference between professional sports and youth sports, I don’t know what to tell you.

You should re-read the original post. There is no mention of youth or professional sports. It was a generalization of people yelling at refs. You made the false assumption that this was related to youth sports.

The OP specifically mentions parents. Since I don't think they're referring to Sr. or Sra. Messi, I'm pretty sure the context is youth sports.

If you are parent/coaching yelling at teenager that is reffing, your behavior is appalling.

Arlington's Rec program has a zero tolerance policy about yelling at refs and coaches have been banned for doing it.

I've yelled to get a ref's attention if there's a kid down on the field and the ref hasn't noticed because they're looking elsewhere.

But that's not what you mean, and otherwise I agree with you.

Ref with plenty if experience here.

TLDR stop yelling at refs, especially young kids. You're only making it worse long term.

Here's the big picture cycle:

Ref starts out young, gets yelled at, isn't paid well, decides getting yelled at isn't worth it, quits.

New ref #2 comes in, lack of experienced refs puts inexperienced refs in situations they aren't ready for, ref makes a few bad calls and is torn to shreds by parents. Ref decides it's not worth it, quits.

Ref #3, 4, 5...... repeat the cycle. 1 in about 20 will last more than a year.

Lots of refs with 10-20 years experience, lots with less than 2. Very few with 2-10 years because starting and getting comfortable making hard calls takes time, the job is thankless, and the pay isnt great especially at first. Many new refs don't cut it.

Remember new refs need time to develop and that's pretty much the reason they were assigned to a third tier <u12 team. Many are thrown into situations they aren't ready for too early because of parents who justify yelling so their kid has a better chance to win. Have some perspective people...

Because some refs are just terrible. They’re being paid. They aren’t WWII Veterans who should be honored.

Do a good job, call a safe and fair game and you won’t get yelled at.

If you’re a ref and you’re always getting screamed at, it’s you.

Ah, Karen has officially entered the discussion.
It’s OK to abuse anyone that’s getting paid. Right. Just like that barista that got your coffee order wrong, or the waiter that didn’t get your order perfect.

Apples and oranges there - if i order a turkey club with no mayo and the server brings it out with mayo i'm returning it and letter them know they got my order wrong. I'm paying for a service and I'm not going to waste my hard earned money because someone can't do their job properly. It sounds like you'd roll over and eat the sandwich to avoid confrontation.

That same expectation doesn't apply to referrees, I'm not paying them directly so i have no say.

This assumes both that you know the rules better than the ref (which rarely seems to be the case) and you believe one ref should be able to simultaneously have a 360 degree view of 22 players and the ball at the exact same time. Along with any lines on the field and the exact relationship of each player to each other. By nature of the fact that leagues don’t do automatic replay and at some ages don’t even do line refs, it seems that soccer leagues have determined that a certain margin of error is acceptable.

If you don’t like that take it up with the league, not with the ref.

A Karen in one context is a Karen in any context.
If you think you can abuse a ref because you disagree with their calls, then you are a prime Karen.

Or you're a referee in a league where ignorant entitled parents with no self-control are constantly at your games

Add in coaches. A coach screamed at a ref this season who looked to be a high schooler until they gave a player a card. It was a foul; but not card worthy and the ref didn't even cite the yellow on the NCSL website. If it gets you your way it's kind of the culture in general. It sucks; but doesn't make it untrue. Until refs start straight up throwing coaches and parents off the sidelines it's not going to stop.
