Doing some research on Delaware and Lewes, Bethany Beach, Rehoboth beaches for a possible move/extended year rental and I'm shocked to read about the high crime rates there. 1 in 10 chance of being a victim of property crime. That's ridiculous. Some websites state that that's some of the highest crime rates in the country! They do not specify whether most of time crime happens seasonal when people flock there all summer but maybe thats it? What else explains this high of crime so such a low number of population? It's baffling.
Back to your original question, yes, crime rises in summer with tourism. Things are different there - most car thefts are due to people leaving the car running when they run into Royal Farms. In some of these small towns, there is one way in and one way out, and if it’s an incorporated city they have their own police force that will nab people. It’s like Chevy Chase MD is safer than Gaithersburg - it’s incorporated, regular police patrols, etc.
