Op here. My kids are young so college strategizing is not on my radar yet.

I have traveled to California dozens of times and even lived in Northern California for several years. I have spent less time in Southern California. I’ve visited several times but that’s not the same as living there, especially now that i have kids. My question was more trying to think through the logistics of our two job options rather than exploring a bunch of data related to SoCal.

The reasons we want to move there are primarily that our careers feel very stalled at the moment, and it seems we are going to have to move if we want to change that. The places where we have had opportunities lately have been DMV (we moved away 5 years ago), Texas, California, and North Dakota. California is the most attractive to us from that list.[/quote]

You don’t make enough to make California comfortable. Your idea of living essentially in different states (like Georgia to Virginia) is ridiculous.  Figure out where one of you can get a good job, and then the other must follow. That’s how everyone does it. With kids your idea of both parents being far away is untenable. Kids require more adult involvement by the time they are upper middle school. Daycare is the easy time.

It’s fine to target San Diego, but you need to level up your salaries. Have you looked at Sacramento?[/quote]
