The police do not care. The other day I ran a red light with a cop parked right there, just to see what would happen. Spoiler: nothing. No reaction. The police in this city are a joke.
Your personal responsibility isn't all that much either, it seems.
This is why you see men in fancy business suits jumping the metro fare gates. When something isn’t against the law (or you don’t enforce the law) society falls apart.
I took the metro for the first time in a long time today, and wondered why I should pay the fare.
Yes, as we all know, if everyone else is doing something that's wrong, it's no longer wrong and you should do it, too.
I think that's how we legalized marijuana and that turned out fine.
No, that's not how we legalized marijuana. We legalized it by legalizing it. With laws.
Laws that were changed because everyone was already ignoring the existing ones. So there was really no alternative but to legalize weed.
Traffic laws are effectively nonexistent (definitely not enforced) in DC. Do what you do!
This. My kid is in one of the schools discussed above and I turn left on Bank Street which is no left turn in the morning. But the police don’t enforce so staying on M until 33rd street has become dangerous. Until they start enforcing it I’ll keep turning on Bank so I don’t get into an accident.
Are you blocking people behind you when you make the illegal turn?
Of course they are. The left on Bank Street necessitates blocking one east-bound lane of traffic on M Street, thereby contributing to the bridge congestion in the morning. That said, the same lane is used to turn left on 33rd Street just a bit further up the block. I have no idea what the PP meant when they said "But the police don’t enforce so staying on M until 33rd street has become dangerous." That doesn't make any sense. The left on Bank Street is definitely more dangerous since it's a mid-block turn with no signal. Cars coming down west-bound M Street might not see you turning until the last moment.
