Nobody seems to have mentioned financial aid as the real reason here. An upper middle class kid from India might be able to afford 20k. That means free tuition at most privates. You get nothing in the UK, and have to pay overseas tuition there. The US is way cheaper. Most selective schools, while need aware for admissions, meet internationals’ full need if admitted. In other words, middle class internationals get free tuition, and donut hole American families pay full freight.
Can anyone confirm this? I find this outrageous if true.
i am the immigrant PP from the previous page. princeton valedictorian is a kid like this. i don't know him personally but it is very unlikely he is LMC in his own country. so yes, as a foreign donut (most likely) he got what amounts to merit aid. i do personally know a student whose parents and grandparents are famous lawyers (abroad), who lived a very charmed UMC life there, and who graduated from HPYMS on a full scholarship, and also had full financial aid offers at several other T15 schools. so, it can be true, but only for a very small number of people. this was about 10 years ago though. i am not sure that kid would be accepted to HPYMS today. the things are getting crazy competitive for internationals as well. many more kids are applying and a different profile, not just the very best. there is a whole new crop of international applicants, seeking primarily labels, and willing to sacrifice financially to get them. meanwhile, the acceptance rates for these kids is even smaller than for US citizens, and falling.
