One of my first jobs was at a pie shop and most certainly the clients skewed elderly. We also had plenty of young people, but I understand OP's observation that old people especially love pie. I don't see a ton of grandmas excited over cupcakes. Cupcakes are trendy but half the time aren't very good...they photograph wonderfully though!

A lot of pastry is something that has ties to traditional cultures and recipes, more than like brownies or ice cream. Maybe when there were more SAHMs who made bread, etc. and had time in the kitchen to bake scratch items that had a lot of resting and waiting time resting it was more popular. [/quote]
