Why not start arresting criminals?
Because lots of cops are too butt-hurt to do their jobs. Not all of them, but a lot of them. It’s a work stand down.
Correct. It IS a work stand down of sorts. And they are 100% right in doing so. The citizens of Washington do not support their police, and those police are giving it right back. I support them completely in their efforts. You did this to yourselves, DC.
You could not be any more WRONG. They are NOT "100% right" - they still have a job to do regardless of whatever else is going on. And by not doing their job, they are harming the citizens they swore to protect and serve. The ringleaders of this "stand down" are clearly unfit to serve as police officers, they have violated their oath of office and are committing an act of extortion. They should be fired, along with any other toxic elements within MPD (looking at you, Proud Boys informants and fist bumpers) and replaced with people who will uphold the oath of their office, who will go out and fight crime, and who will do better for the people of DC. THAT is what is 100% right.
Great! So you’re signing up? You can show them how it’s done! Just know that if you actually try to “go out and fight crime,” you will be absolutely hung out to dry by the public and the politicians. Be prepared to be sued, put through court, and potentially lose your livelihood for you and your family. Know that “upholding the oath of your office” means performing jobs that are politically unpopular, and you will be treated with disdain, disrespect, and distrust no matter how honorably you do your job. Know that you’ll be assumed a “Proud Boy” even if they don’t remotely align with your views. But yay! We need more officers because there is such an extreme shortage. I’m really glad to hear you are signing up!
Most police officers are good people but there are unfortunately far too many arrogant jerks who wouldn't hesitate to abuse their power, use excessive force and commit other abuses and do so much damage that it tarnishes the overall reputation of the police. In many cases there are notorious cops who repeatedly and unabashedly abuse their power with no repercussions whatsoever. This has led to a lot of community fatigue which has expressed itself as disdain, disrespect and distrust. This is not some "sjw" fluff, it is serious and it deeply undermines support for police. Yet police unions completely refuse to acknowledge this and continue to shield and protect the arrogant jerks rather than helping cleaning their organizations up. And as a result we have this bizarre pendulum effect of either total overpolicing or stand-downs with no reasonable middle ground whatsoever. It should be clear to see that these approaches are not working. And as for glib and unserious comments like "yay when are you signing up" that ignores the fact that many of us do in fact care about our community and likely already are doing much for it - if we didn't, we wouldn't be commenting at all.
