NP here with an add-on question that I am hoping someone can answer. In my current agency and position, I have been cleared for public trust moderate (possibly high?). The agency I hope to move to requires public trust moderate. Can my existing public trust transfer or is a new background investigation needed when transferring to new agency? Does it depend on how long ago my current public trust was completed? Just wondering if there is any opportunity to fast track this hiring process. Getting worried about the shutdown.
It depends, and yes. Generally, it will transfer with reciprocity if the investigation was completed within the last 5 years (for example, going from one FIRREA agency to another FIRREA agency). Going from PT-High to PT-Moderate should transfer just fine, assuming it was granted within past 5 years. Just be sure to ask your hiring contact; if they don't know, they should be able to ask someone in the agency's security office or put you in touch directly. However, some agencies don't accept reciprocity. I've heard this is true of intel, DoD, and State - they want to do their own investigations, even of transferees within government. However, with those agencies I'd assume you're looking at real Security Clearances, not Public Trust. There's a real good Reddit about Security Clearances. All your questions will be answered there.
