I don't get too emotional on the subject, but I generally don't like them because it's something a young person is sticking their older selves with. What would look good on you and be meaningful to you at 20 is going to be a little different from what would look good and meaningful at 65. I think the number of 30+ year old tattoos that still look good are vanishingly small. And, yeah, I guess some people would say that everybody looks crappy at 65, but I don't think that's really the case.
Not everyone over 65 looks like crap, that is too extreme, but certainly you can agree that no one ever looks at someone over 60ish and marvels at their natural beauty (you might think they look beautiful for their age, or think they must have been a great beauty in their youth, but that's a different thing) I don't even have tattoos but my thinking has always been- why not just celebrate your old body as you want, instead of fearing that you don't conform to society's expectation of what people over a certain age should look like?
I think folks should wait until they're pretty old before getting a tattoo. That way you have a pretty good idea of who you are, what will remain important to you, and what you're going to look like - more or less - for the rest of your life. Then again, I don't think anyone should choose a religion (if any) until they're 30 or older. So my views definitely aren't mainstream.
