I lived in what I think was a pretty moderate part of Florida.

I think what people miss about Florida is that it’s been a place where messed up people go to escape from themselves. They often present themselves as staid conservative Bible thumpers but often have LGBTQ, alcoholic, schizotypal or bipolar skeletons in the closet, and they live in places where the ocean opens up and swallows everything every 50 years or so.
