If a fraction of the registered Republicans in Ward 3 had opted to Register as Democrats and voted in the Democratic primary, it would have been enough to change the outcome. The difference was only 2,371 votes. Let's face it, the Democratic primary is the only one that counts in D.C.; to my knowledge, a Republican has ever defeated a Democrat in a contested general election. Even if people don't like that, they can still vote for the Democrat they like in the primary and a Republican in the general (it's not like Krucoff was running against anyone in the Republican primary).

From my experience working the polls, though, very few D.C. voters - no matter their SES or how long they've lived here - have any idea about the policies of the people they vote for. I'd gather most wouldn't even be able to tell you all of the people they vote for (particularly in the Board of Elections, Attorney, and even some At-Large Council races), and would know even fewer of the other candidates who were running.[/quote]
