For once I actually have something interesting to say here! Perhaps the most famous baby/child doctor/pediatrician of all time was Dr. Benjamin Spock. Dr. Spock worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. from 1947 to 1951. His Baby and Child Care book, over 50 million copies sold, was written and published while he was there, in 1946. My family not only lived in Rochester at the time; we lived next door to Dr. Spock and his family. I was a young child at the time. Years later, when Dr. Spock became a famous liberal, to some left wing, I asked my parents what he had been like. Was he super liberal then? Their response: not that they noticed EXCEPT that in his family, their children called him and his wife by their first names: Benji and ..... I don't remember what his wife's first name was.
Fascinating! My kids were born in the 70s and my mom gave me Dr. Spock's book and I read it and learned a lot. In fact when my tiny son was projectile vomiting the Enfamil they sent home from the hospital with him mom recommended the evaporated milk and Karo syrup formula in Spock's book which I tried and my son digested that well and stopped vomiting so I used it until he was off formula and on to regular whole milk, also used it for my second child. I still don't fully understand why people today think that formula is such a bad idea given the scarcity of baby formula last year, like if you can't get the formula product you usually use why not use that in a pinch? Parents now seem to think your baby will die or be brain damaged on Dr. Spock's formula even though a huge number of people who are parents now got it as babies and are apparently doing fine, other than not recognizing that they are doing fine even though they drank Carnation milk as babies.
