There those athletes who are recruited and commit to D1, then those who go through the process to commit to D3. Among the local privates (not the WCAC schools), Bullis probably has the most D1 athletes, then Landon and Prep and I'm sure the number varies from year to year from anything like 3-4 to 10 D1 and then a handful of D3. While schools like Sidwell, St. Albans, NCS, Potomac, and Holton, may have 5 or 6 D3 and 1 to 4 D1. GDS, Maret, Field, Burke, very few college athletes.
Maret is more like the second category you describe, not in same category as Burke LOL. They def send anywhere from 8-12 to college each year out of classes around 80. Although I suspect this may be moot, I thought OP was talking about recruited 9th graders.
+1 Maret consistently has 10+ kids each year who continue their sport in college. This year I think it's about 15 kids in a class of 85. That's close to 20% of the grade. A good number of those (maybe about 1/3) are D1.
This just simply isn't true. Maybe they have 1 or 2 D1, every now and then, not more than that. D3, sure. All you need for that is to be decent at the sport and for top academic LACS, to have really good grades.
To get tipped by a coach at Williams, Amherst, or Middlebury you need to be an impressive athlete. Swarthmore and Haverford have a lot of attrition in upper years (or at least that was the case when I was looking at schools a billion years ago) and a lot of kids study abroad so maybe a bit easier to get tipped as an athlete. Pomona also has strong athletics for D3.
+1. PP is also just wrong. Just this year there are 4 D1 commits that I know of. 1 Football (3 more recruited and offered D1 but opted D2 or D3 for higher academics) 1 Girls bball 1 Girls soccer 1 Volleyball This is JUST D1. There are 9-10 more D2/3. I feel like I’m missing at least one. Full disclosure, I have a kid on one of the teams. Junior class 2 girls soccer already committed to GTown Sophomore class Footballer 5 D1 offers already Girl BBall 3 D1 offers Freshman class Boys Bball 1 D1 offer
