What on earth is GDA?

Among the local privates (not the WCAC schools), Bullis probably has the most D1 athletes, then Landon and Prep and I'm sure the number varies from year to year from anything like 3-4 to 10 D1 and then a handful of D3. While schools like Sidwell, St. Albans, NCS, Potomac, and Holton, may have 5 or 6 D3 and 1 to 4 D1. GDS, Maret, Field, Burke, very few college athletes.
Maret is more like the second category you describe, not in same category as Burke LOL. They def send anywhere from 8-12 to college each year out of classes around 80.
Although I suspect this may be moot, I thought OP was talking about recruited 9th graders.
+1 Maret consistently has 10+ kids each year who continue their sport in college. This year I think it's about 15 kids in a class of 85. That's close to 20% of the grade. A good number of those (maybe about 1/3) are D1.
This just simply isn't true. Maybe they have 1 or 2 D1, every now and then, not more than that. D3, sure. All you need for that is to be decent at the sport and for top academic LACS, to have really good grades.
To get tipped by a coach at Williams, Amherst, or Middlebury you need to be an impressive athlete. Swarthmore and Haverford have a lot of attrition in upper years (or at least that was the case when I was looking at schools a billion years ago) and a lot of kids study abroad so maybe a bit easier to get tipped as an athlete. Pomona also has strong athletics for D3.
No, no, no. California, Texas, and the New York metro area are generally the strongest areas for sports.
and Florida
Not true. I am very familiar with ECNL soccer and some of the very best teams nationally have been from the DMV over the last 10 years, and almost every player has also played on their high school team.
Really? The DMV very best teams nationally? Not even close. The DMV teams/clubs are not considered strong regionally let alone nationally.

Wash DC isn’t some place with AAAAA big time sports public schools like long beach poly PHS or westlake PHS or highland park PHS. Or privates like Harvard westlake sports programs. They just don’t have total students, athletic budget or top coaching staff to supplant a travel team program’s expertise.
SJC comes closest. Sidwell started recruiting basketball team members around the coaches’ kids. But schools and parents here are academic focused.

With boys the top players aren't allowed to play for their HS team, MLSnext prevents it. But, boys soccer isn't something most schools are recruiting for given the sheer number of boys that play high level Club soccer in the area. They don't need to recruit--the incoming classes have enough kids that just get in academically. There were over 120 boys that came out for soccer tryouts last year, and maybe 1 was actually recruited.
