Forbes gives Bennington College a C+ financial rating--which is not good. Hampshire College has an even worse rating = D.
Hampshire really should be thought of more as an educational experiment than a full-blown college, that is why--along with its location-- it will be relatively straightforward to merge with another and retain itself as a niche college within a college. For some reason VT private schools have struggled--I think they tended to be unusually small and often are relatively recently founded compared to other US colleges. Marlboro College had 150 students, was founded in 1946. Bennington College only has 660 students and was founded in 1932. They just don't have the historical assets/appreciation and size to withstand financial stresses. It's near impossible to run a modern college at this size--I think the minimum really should be 1200.
