I think you and I see this in completely different ways.  You do realize Blinken started it, right?

China sent the Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.  The Chinese, culturally, would expect to be treated respectfully as guests.  Blinken's opening statements lit the fuse, so there was pretty much zero chance of success.

The Chinese response was classic.  "The US does not speak to China from a position of strength."  In other words, it's a way of saying, 'yeah, you should be thankful we're even talking to you."

This would be a typical response you'd expect from a Chinese minister treated as a demi-god in his own country.  He would look down on Blinken as pedestrian and unequal to his status, so Blinken insulting him in his first speech sabotaged any meaningful progress that could have been made.[/quote]
