Could this have anything to do with the way math was taught? Instead of straight math it was a confusing clfk of composing and decomposing, addends and many other tear inducing and hair pulling strategies that didn’t translate to higher math learning?
This is the level of math demanded by the Common Core State Standards. Unfortunately, we have to teach to the standard. I want my students to know that there are multiple strategies to reach an answer but I agree, it gets to be a little too much at times. As far as MCAP goes, even at the elementary level there are many adults who wouldn't be proficient. I care more about MAP scores than MCAP. MCAP is a colossal waste of time. We have four days of ELA and four days of math testing when we return from spring break. That's eight blocks of time I could be teaching my students the skills I know they need rather than wasting our time assessing them on skills I know they have or don't have because I work with them daily.
