We decided against Reston, but did consider Fairfax City. The problem is, we are not local to the area and do not know anyone living there. We have received a bit of information from various forums about it and it sounds favorable, although the "town" aspect is on a smaller scale than Vienna is from what we understand. It is difficult to pick an area to live in when you aren't there and you are picking your forever house.
you really should do a short term rental first, then - maybe 3-6 months. Get a feel for the area and what you want. I know it may not be ideal, but you also don't want to purchase a house, and then decide within a month you hate the neighborhood and area. Too bad you've ruled out Reston - North Reston is really nice. Plus, metro access coming soon.
