you really should do a short term rental first, then - maybe 3-6 months. Get a feel for the area and what you want. I know it may not be ideal, but you also don't want to purchase a house, and then decide within a month you hate the neighborhood and area.
Too bad you've ruled out Reston - North Reston is really nice. Plus, metro access coming soon.
