We need to repeal the second amendment. Replace it with a blanket ban on firearm possession and sales, with few exceptions for hunting and similar sports. The burden of proof has to be on the individual: license (like driving: theory and practicum, final exam), psychiatrist assessment and full background check. No fully automated or assault type weapons, no handguns, no accessories allowing modifications to that end, and criminalization of modifications of weapons. A variety of semi-automated hunting rifles allowed only. Note: handguns are the most lethal firearms - they are responsible for over half of gun deaths in the USA, through accidental discharge, suicide and homicide. They need to be completely banned.
The 2nd amendment doesn't need to be repealed. It could be interpreted the way it was until 2008. Before then, the 2nd amendment was interpreted not as an individual right, but as a collective one meant to prevent the federal government from taking away states' rights to defend themselves (with militias). The current legal interpretation of the 2nd amendment is another perversion visited upon us by federalist society fascists. This is a good discussion: https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/second_amendment These are the same goons, BTW, who visited Citizens United upon us, allowing an explosion in dark money funding in politics, which has been found to have greatly advantaged Republicans in elections, and who soon will be imposing abortion bans-- all decisions that are opposed by a majority of Americans. Our democracy is slowly being taken apart, and most of us have stood by and let it happen because "I'm not a political person." Well. This is why you can't afford NOT to be a political person.
