You can send your parents to live in a cheaper country too. Being aware of laws in other countries is useful too. You can receive a resident visa for various countries if you “invest” in them, for some of you ,may be just one payment for the peace of mind that your parents will be better off in another country. For example, many people retire in Costa Rica where their social security alone covers all necessities and more, same with Ecuador, etc where there are already established retiree American communities who went there because they can still live a very decent life for their rest of their life’s thanks to their social security checks.[/quote]

I thought the pp comment was not directly helpful but makes a good point. The horrible elder care situation in the US does not have to be this way and if anyone's inclined to be politically active, this could be an area where advocacy got better policies is needed. I'd personally be interested in which countries do this well.

But probably not going to send my parents to a cheaper country where they don't speak the language or understand customs![/quote]
