Subject: How to get over anger at parents for not managing $$
Elder care attorney. We met with one about care options for my dad. He was incredibly knowledgeable about available resources, qualifying for Medicaid, etc. I was so stressed before we saw him and felt relieved afterwards to have a plan and someone to guide us through it.

You can send your parents to live in a cheaper country too. Being aware of laws in other countries is useful too. You can receive a resident visa for various countries if you “invest” in them, for some of you ,may be just one payment for the peace of mind that your parents will be better off in another country. For example, many people retire in Costa Rica where their social security alone covers all necessities and more, same with Ecuador, etc where there are already established retiree American communities who went there because they can still live a very decent life for their rest of their life’s thanks to their social security checks.
I thought the pp comment was not directly helpful but makes a good point. The horrible elder care situation in the US does not have to be this way and if anyone's inclined to be politically active, this could be an area where advocacy got better policies is needed. I'd personally be interested in which countries do this well.
But probably not going to send my parents to a cheaper country where they don't speak the language or understand customs!

The reason is that we’re the only industrialized country without a value added tax. But whenever that’s proposed Econ 101 kicks in and we say “we can’t do that! That’s regressive!” Social security tax, as a wage tax, is also regressive but that doesn’t bother anyone because it works so well. If we want the benefits of free care we must have a value added tax, just as every other industrialized country has. Without that, it’s not happening. Either way is fine, but either way we must accept the consequences.
I'm fine with a value added tax if it helps take care of more people, but hey, in MoCo liberal Yt women went nuts when they were asked to wear a mask so....

It’s also because our defense budget protects the entire western world.
