Valerie Coll of Silver Spring filed to run against incumbent Brenda Wolff for the District 5 seat on the Board of Education. https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/schools/longtime-mcps-elementary-school-teacher-running-for-school-board/?fbclid=IwAR2vT-DBJ7i41w-FR6QNAbYFHXwHvlYSctu_f22ozi683ktYRoDlLer3imQ
Oh, that is verrrry interesting. I bet that MCEA endorses her instead of the incumbent.
Great. So our choices are Coll, a union shill, or Wolff who supports busing and teaching CRT principles to students. Frying pan or fire?
Why is she a union shill? She probably knows more about schools than the rest of the board put together, and 1000% more than Steve Austin, who flounced up north to Frederick.
Anyone backed by the teachers union is a union shill. They will expect her to support their positions on the BOE in exchange for their endorsement which, unfortunately, still carries a lot of weight in Montgomery County. I think most parents have woken up to the toxic nature of MCEA's effect on the schools. But most people without kids still have no idea and simply vote for whomever is on the Apple ballot.
When did the union endorse her? PP above was speculating.
My bad. I retract the shill comment and nerf it to "person with close teacher's union ties." I think my point still stands though not as tall.
I get it, but I’m willing to take a chance on her over Wolff at this point. And the fact that she has more recent experience in MCPS is a plus for me, some of the current members are out of touch.
At the very least, I'll be open minded with her. FWIW, I completely agree with her that the BOE and MCPS has not paid enough attention to elementary students for a long time. This goes back to before COVID, but their pandemic response highlighted that. Elementary kids should have been back in Sept 2020, even if MS or HS kids had to wait longer
