News flash. People like being around people that look and act like they do. Shared language, culture and priorities bind people together. The idea of a hugely diverse and integrated culture is lovely but not completely realistic.
It can never be perfect, the but there are a couple of schools that are waaay more diverse than Wootton, and they are right next to Wootton -- RM, QO, Northwest.
Unless RM/IB, no way I am picking one of those over Wotton. Not even close.
You need to educate yourself about RM and stop trashing it. Given the economic diversity at RM, I'd say it is VERY close. 2019 AP scores: Percentage of males at the school who took at least one AP exam and passed: RM (83.7%); Wootton (87.3%) Percentage of females at the school who took at least one AP exam and passed: RM (83.9%); Wootton (86.8%) By race: At RM, whites and Hispanics scored higher than their counterparts at Wootton At Wootton, Asians and African Americans scored higher than their counterparts at RM % of AP tests with passing scores (3-5) Wootton - 88.6% Whitman - 88.3% Poolesville - 87.9% Blair - 87.1% WJ - 86.2% Churchill - 83.6% RM - 81% BCC - 78.0% Scores at QO and Northwest were substantially lower than at Wootton and RM. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/reports/2019/191219%20HS%20Princ_2019_AP_IB_Exams.dh.pdf
Thank you for posting this. We are zoned for Wootton but have thought about moving into the RM zone. RM's stats are very impressive.
RM parent here.. I'm sure someone will say that the RM stats are skewed by RMIB students (my kid is one), but honestly, why would that matter? It's like saying Wootton scores are skewed because all the UMC families. In cluster students can join the IB program in 11th grade (must have the grades and recs) So, really, the fact that RM has an IB magnet program is a plus. RM is very diverse, both racially and SES, and the scores reflect that diversity. Even so, a ton of students, including non IB students, do take AP classes/tests. It's a great school, even with all the issues. Main St is awesome, and my kid loves that they get open lunch. There are so many active clubs, and the diversity means any student can find their "tribe".
It is totally skewed by RMIB kids. Why would that matter? If you don't think that matters, why would parents try to find a best school/program for their kids? Like you have done with your kid.
Of course it matters in terms of whether a school is good. But, the score being high because of RMIB students doesn't matter in terms of comparing one school over another. Some people think RM isn't good, and the *only* reason why scores are good is because RMIB. I'm saying: why does it matter if RM scores are good only because of RMIB? Like I stated, it's like saying W schools are only good because of the UMC families. RM is a great choice because of the diversity and the option for students to join IB starting from 11th. IMO, part of the reason why a school is good is because of the program it offers.
Of course it matters. It matters a lot. If you are considering or recommending RM (non magnet), parents have to understand how good/bad non-magnet portion of school is. And guess what, without sitting in the same classroom day in and day out, avg test score is an excellent way to tell.
I can tell you know nothing about RM. IB magnet students take a lot of AP classes, with non IB students. Guess what? The AP participation and exam rate at RM is pretty high. My kid loves RM. DC has a friend at Wootton, and they compare.
