Only animals that humans love go to heaven.  If you had a pet cockroach, you will find it when you die and go to heaven.

The worst take on this question I think I've ever seen was in the children's book [i]God Needed a Puppy[/i], where a little kid's dog dies because God killed it to take it to heaven and give it to a different kid who had recently died and wanted a puppy. Our kid got a copy and after I previewed it, I hid it. I should probably just throw it out.
