I saw it play out just yesterday. I have a coworker like OP's husband. Ultimate social climber, told everyone that their family owns all the oilfields in N. America. Another coworker overheard and nearly spit out her coffee; turns out she grew up with this person, and their family definitely doesn't own oilfields.
