So you have never met a black kid who wanted to learn? I bet at this same school there are plenty of white kids who do not want to learn. Just like there are some from every racial group. A lot of 1st graders would rather play then learn. The problem with her comment was that it was said in a place were privacy would not been expected. It was said about 1st graders. My guess is that she is really reflecting her biases about a group and not her kids, which is what makes her point even scarier. Also she did not say some, she made it all, inclusive of every black kid. Sorry, I know plenty of black kids who want to learn. Sorry if you have never had the pleasure of meeting a black professional in your life or meeting a black family that cares about their kids education or black kids who want to be educated.
Your typical politically correct retort. Whoever this black lady was she was speaking about her own experiences. Chances are that a black person would know many more children of their own race than a white person would. A sub travels around. She could be on the west side of the county on Monday, up in Damascus on Tuesday, in some hell hole on the east side on Wednesday, and so on. Her chances of getting a well-rounded view of MCPS classrooms is much better than a teacher who stays at the same school for years. I would defer to the black lady as more knowledgeable than any other poster on here.
Thank you for a breath of fresh air. The retort to which you responded reminds me of the tired old politically correct approach of pointing out a few "exceptions to the generalization" argument. Of course, there are exceptions to the generalization, and I doubt the sub would argue with that. However, I typically find that those "exceptions to the generalization" that I've known in my life absolutely shudder at the thought, and work very diligently (as ALL upstanding parents should - white, black, brown, yellow, whatever), to keep their children from becoming the generalization to which the substitute teacher was referring. Your point about travelling around the county and being better exposed to the realities in the county is golden, as well.
