If “it’s happening” means “people in the DMV are freaking about covid” - you are correct. You can also see it in the increasingly hysterical calls to close DCPS again.
IDK if people are freaking out or not - maybe - but yeah I do see some slight changes in behavior. It is a touch harder to get instacart spots, it's taking longer to get curbside at big box stores etc. So at least some % of people in the DMV are now declining to go into stores. I don't think it's huge percentages, people are out and about but SOMEONE is deciding to stay home, stay out of indoor settings etc.
Seems smart -- people are making intelligent choices based on risks of infection. Maybe people learned from experiences last year and are getting better at calibrating their behavior to real risk. I would expect some inconveniences but I don't think an increase in curbside pickup or people avoiding indoor interactions is cause for alarm or is anywhere comparable to where we were in May of 2020, for instance. A lot of people seem primed for disaster and I don't feel that's what's happening. I do think we need to gear up for a rocky fall. I am hoping people can remain focused on what is most important, which to me is making sure my kid can be as safe as possible at in person school (which is an non-negotiable for us due to work -- it's either in-person public or some kind of in-person group childcare, so we've got to make that safe enough for kids one way or another). If we need to cook at home more and skip some socializing over the next few months I do not view that as a great tragedy. We have adjusted over the last year.
