I'm going to go out on a limb on the bolded, and guess that it's because she's expecting a girl.

I love the name Petra.  In my family we sometimes have nicknames that stick that have nothing to do with the sounds in their names.   But I also could see calling her Pet, or Sweetpea, or something else that starts with a P, like Petunia or Pickle or Pipsqueak.  Not outside of the house, but for a pet name in the family.

If you're looking for an official nickname of Petra, that you might tell the school "This is our daughter Petra, she goes by . . . " the only one I can think of is Pete.  Which I think is OK, but not as nice as Petra. [/quote]
