Petra is a very strong name. I like it, and I think it's best without a nickname. If one pops up naturally, great.

I love Petra and have a good friend with the name. It is a very sophisticated, elegant name.

I also like PP's suggestion of calling her Pet. Simple and sweet. I don't like most of the other nickname suggestions. My DD has a bunch of silly nicknames we call her, some of which have to do with her name and some of which don't. Nicknames tend to just crop up. Some longer names need a shorter version because otherwise they are too much of a mouthful (Alexa for Alexandra or Callie for Calliope), but Petra doesn't. It is easy for people to pronounce and spelled phonetically. She won't have issues.

Enduring, strong, breathtaking, brilliant and beautiful all describe my friend Petra. Some people havd been known to call her Peach Tree.

Petra's a fine name & doesn't need a nickname.

DP. This is why expectant parents don't share their chosen names before birth, because people are often so rude about it. OP is asking for nicknames, not your personal views on what she should name her children.

I love Petra and don't think it needs a nickname. I'm a Sara and have never had a nickname. But you could always call her Pet as a baby, like an early 20th century dowager referring to a beloved child.

I'm going to go out on a limb on the bolded, and guess that it's because she's expecting a girl.

I love the name Petra. In my family we sometimes have nicknames that stick that have nothing to do with the sounds in their names. But I also could see calling her Pet, or Sweetpea, or something else that starts with a P, like Petunia or Pickle or Pipsqueak. Not outside of the house, but for a pet name in the family.

If you're looking for an official nickname of Petra, that you might tell the school "This is our daughter Petra, she goes by . . . " the only one I can think of is Pete. Which I think is OK, but not as nice as Petra.

Petra is gorgeous and I would use it without nickname, but I’d go with Pippa/Pippin/Piper (and probably recast Peter Piper and Petra Piper for all subsequent tongue twisters)

I love Petra! I think it is very fresh and sweet sounding. I’d probably stick to calling her Petra but also nn might be: Pipa, Poppy, Ra Ra, Pet or really anything else. Love names just happen. Please ignore the people saying it is an ugly name.
