I was behind someone in a straight lane who blocked the lane to wait to squeeze into a left turn only lane. Selfish and stupid. Everyone was honking but they wouldn't budge. I was taught if you miss your turn you DON'T stop. Just maintain the flow of traffic and look for the next turn. It was less than 1/8 mile up the road, easy u-ey. Have people not been taught this? Why is missing a turn the end of the world? GPS?
Wait, what? So was the turn lane full and they were just behind the last car waiting to get in the lane? Or were they stopped beside cars in the lane? I ask because for some reason, people in DC think that making a legal left hand turn that stops traffic behind them in that lane is cause to honk, threaten, and scream at people unless they either drive into head on traffic or mow down any pedestrians in the crosswalk. The driver isn't doing anything illegal, they are just mad they have to stop for 5 seconds on a busy city street.
Not the PP, but I'm picturing someone who missed the opportunity to get at the end of the line to turn, so instead is trying to force his way in near the front of the line, instead of just going straight through the light and turning around. I see that happen all the time -- it's right up there with people who know that long line of cars on a highway is waiting to exit, but instead will drive right up to the exit and the force his way over. As for the PP who responded, while technically holding up blocks of traffic to turn left is not illegal, there is a reason a lot of city streets prohibit left turns during rush hour. It really truly is disruptive to the safe flow of traffic, and dangerous for pedestrians who happen to be in the crosswalk when a driver focused on waiting for a break in oncoming traffic flings the car over. I was taught that on gridded streets with no dedicated turn lanes or green arrows, it's more polite to just make a series of right turns until you're pointed in the direction you want to go. I can't wait for the day GPS software includes "no left turns" in the route settings.
