Wait, what? So was the turn lane full and they were just behind the last car waiting to get in the lane? Or were they stopped beside cars in the lane?
I ask because for some reason, people in DC think that making a legal left hand turn that stops traffic behind them in that lane is cause to honk, threaten, and scream at people unless they either drive into head on traffic or mow down any pedestrians in the crosswalk. The driver isn't doing anything illegal, they are just mad they have to stop for 5 seconds on a busy city street.

People in VA never learned to stay right, pass left. Clueless twots don’t even notice when a huge line of cars back up behind them.
OMG this so much. The northern leg of the GW Parkway is the bane of my existence. Rolling roadblocks going 45mph, and idiots who drop to 30 to go up a hill. MAINTAIN YOUR SPEED and/or MOVE THE EFF OVER. I know the scenery is pretty, but if the road ahead of you is wide open and there are 20 cars riding your tail, you are doing something wrong.
New Jersey has handled these people well. They simply have signs that say "Stay right except to pass". We have signs that say Right lane to travel slow or something. So it implies that the left lane is the fast lane and not the passing lane. With a speed limit of 50, someone going 52 might feel justified sitting in the left lane.
Yes, it’s nuts they haven’t learned this universal rule of the road.
Guess we need more explicit signs.
“Stay in the right lane, morons!”
This is hilarious coming from the people who ignore the actual universal rule of SPEED LIMITS
"Universal rule"? LOLOLOLOLOLOL.
If you want to be speed limit enforcer please stay out of the left lane so you don't get someone killed. THANKS!

Perfect example of a person who makes the roads more dangerous for everyone, and who thinks that breaking the law themselves (not complying with slower traffic keeping right / using left lane to pass) makes them morally superior.
Yes I hate those people who say "you tailgate me, I'll drive slower!" THEY are the ones making it dangerous for everyone. Because then I have people tailgating me etc etc.
Do you see how your tailgating of people is dangerous? The argument that "you're the one forcing me to drive dangerously because you're making me mad" is... abusive.
So let's say you are in the left lane on the GW parkway going the speed limit, faster, slower, whatever. I pull up behind you and there are 5 cars behind me. Am I not supposed to "ask" you to get over? Now I have the car behind me on my butt, and the other 4 cars are all on each others butts. You may think they're jerks too but that's how people drive around here. Who is the asshole? It's clearly the one in front who isn't using the left lane properly.
Both are assholes! All of the people you described are!
Tailgating is "asking" like brandishing a bat at someone who didn't get the message about "stand to the right / walk to the left" on metro escalators.
You're off the escalator in 10 seconds! And there is no law about stand on the right/walk on the left. Follow the law and use the left lane to pass only! Everything can be avoided if you weren't such an idiot!
Thanks for the assumption, but I only use the left lane to pass.
You are not law enforcement and you have no right to illegally threaten anyone. And tailgating is a threat. You are choosing to put people in danger.
Also, FYI, when I'm going 5 mph above the speed limit to pass someone going 5mph below the speed limit, that is legal. Just because you want to go 20mph over the limit doesn't mean I'm doing anything wrong.
Well I'm not tailgating you. I give people time to pass. I only get annoyed when you're NOT passing someone or you stay in the left lane and don't get back over. I don't drive in the left lane except to pass someone.

I don't care. I didn't pay over $100k for this Range Rover to sit waiting behind your ugly Toyota. Get out of my way.
Okay, I laughed at this. Well done.
But NGL, I actually do kind of feel that way when driving my > $100k Benz. If I'm in the mid-range SUV, not so much.

That happened to me yesterday. I was making a legal left turn off 16th Street and the guy behind me nearly hit me trying to squeeze past me. I had pulled up as much as possible to let the cars behind me pull around, anticipating that they would try to do so anyway, but I still got tons of honks. Drivers are so damn impatient that it's scary sometimes.
I agree it's awful, and it's all over the place here. What can we do about it??
This is the only thing cops should actually be used for. When they witness this behavior, they need to pull the cars over. I have seen a zillion cops watch people run red lights and they do NOTHING. They need to crack down on distracted and aggressive driving.
