Why on earth does it matter what he's doing with his extra time?  He has simply noted that he will save about 80 hours of drive time over the course of a year, and that that is worth more to him than the difference in price.  So he's prepared to pay $20 a hour for free time.  I don't see why that implies self importance, or why it matters whether he cures cancer or relaxes in his back yard for that time.

If you prefer to drive and save the $20 per hour then that too is your choice and implies nothing about self importance.

The only thing that does perhaps indicate a misplaced sense of self-importance is your willingness to criticize someone else for his decision which is entirely his business.
