Any other DC liberals out there who would rather just not pay federal taxes? No? Just me?
That would never happen. We pay more federal taxes in the aggregate than 22 other states and the highest rate in the nation per capita. Parasitic red states like West Virginia would never agree to give up those tax receipts.
That’s because DC is wealthy. DC pays the same tax rates as everyone else. This argument has never made sense to me.
It doesn't make sense that the people who contribute more than nearly half the states should have zero say as to how those dollars are spent? But you're happy to keep taking our money, right?
Your argument implies if DC was poor and contributed less than other states that it would not be worthy of statehood. Dollars to the Treasury should not be the basis for statehood.
No, the implication is that taxation deserves representation, and DC residents' contribution is commensurate with those of other states. There is no principled argument against DC statehood. The boundaries of the federal zone required by the constitution are not defined in the constitution, and new states have obviously been added with regularity and for a variety of reasons. The sole reason republicans don't want DC to be a state is because the population is liberal. The intellectual and moral void behind this position is clear from the arguments made in favor of it ("there are no extractive industries in DC," "there aren't enough car dealerships in DC," "DC residents basically have representation because sometimes members of congress have to drive past their lawn signs").
