Autopsies proved the girls were still breathing or at least living when they were put in the oil drums.

Also I don't think the initial reason he killed the girls was to cover up his wife's murder.[b] Remember he strangled both kids first, then he went after the wife in bed. The kids woke up from his suffocation attempt and he bundled them into the truck with the mother's dead body.[/b]
