Confederates were not "traitors" to their states, at a time when the Union was still more of a concept than a reality. But yes, remove the names of Confederate generals from US federal bases. Whatever perceived benefit there was at the time (eg, restoring national unity after the Civil War) has long since passed. I like the idea of naming them after a diverse selection of well-chosen Medal of Honor winners, but realize that our great-grandchildren will eventually find offense with something about each person and rename them again[i][u].
And if that happens, that's OK! When you know better you do better. So find names that make sense now, in our current time, in our current society, and if in a future time and society they decide that person or name isn't appropriate for a Base name, who the hell cares. Currently, naming a fort after a racist who lost the war seems ill advised. I really like the idea of Mary Walker. I'd never heard of her before this thread - certainly sounds like someone who should be honored!
