Make sure your kid takes classes that meet on Fridays. That cuts out Thursday binge drinking. The school should not allow so much blackout drinking at football games. Also, girls need to travel in groups of at least 4. UVA really does have some hot spots like football games and fraternities that you should only attend with a group of like minded friends. The school does nothing to reign it in.
I can speak to drinking at football games. I am a parent of two DCS who have been or are in the UVA marching band and have been attending virtually every home football game for the past 6 years. I sit in the student section because that is closest to the band and the tickets cost less First of all, until this past year hardly any students even attended the football games, and those who did typically arrived late and left early. It was quite disheartening actually to see so much empty space where students would be sitting had they attended and I felt sorry for the players, the band and the cheerleaders. No outside drinks are allowed in and for the past couple years the only bags allowed inside the stadium are clear plastic bags. I am not saying students wouldn't figure out a way to smuggle in smaller bottles of alcohol - just saying the school doesn't make it easy. Most of the games are in the afternoon - again, not saying students don't drink in daylight but just that it is easier to see what's going on. I have been sitting next to and in the midst of these students for most games for years and there simply is not a lot of "blackout drinking at football games" like the PP claims.
This is an exaggeration. The student section was a little thinner towards to the end of London's career (2009-2015), but crowds have been fine under Bronco. Except for the Liberty game. Dumb game and bad weather will do that.
