We saw a lot of lunchtime / afternoon drinking on Thursdays in town - college age kids - and most of the girls were wearing micro-shorts and revealing tops. It was like hookersville not Charlottesville.
We also saw a very, very different set of college students walking into classes on the Friday morning, early. Not hungover, not wearing "last night's" clothes. Not dressed like hoes.
So clearly two tribes exist its just about which one you get into.
I have news for you. Those were probably the same kids.![]()

If your son doesn't want to partake there is plenty to get involved with, tell him not to worry about that.
Have him look up clubs he might want to get involved with.
If you want to avoid the drinking culture, first step is avoid frats and sororities

Also, girls need to travel in groups of at least 4. UVA really does have some hot spots like football games and fraternities that you should only attend with a group of like minded friends. The school does nothing to reign it in.
I can speak to drinking at football games. I am a parent of two DCS who have been or are in the UVA marching band and have been attending virtually every home football game for the past 6 years. I sit in the student section because that is closest to the band and the tickets cost less First of all, until this past year hardly any students even attended the football games, and those who did typically arrived late and left early. It was quite disheartening actually to see so much empty space where students would be sitting had they attended and I felt sorry for the players, the band and the cheerleaders. No outside drinks are allowed in and for the past couple years the only bags allowed inside the stadium are clear plastic bags. I am not saying students wouldn't figure out a way to smuggle in smaller bottles of alcohol - just saying the school doesn't make it easy. Most of the games are in the afternoon - again, not saying students don't drink in daylight but just that it is easier to see what's going on. I have been sitting next to and in the midst of these students for most games for years and there simply is not a lot of "blackout drinking at football games" like the PP claims.

Sad and frightening.
Despite the fact that they have had more than one student murdered under these circumstances. And God knows how many raped.
College sexual assault statistics are massively overinflated. They conflate sexual touching on a dancefloor with rape, absurd.
How to you factor into your conclusion the fact that most rapes go unreported?
